Petition to the House of Commons

Whereas:
  • Provide all Canadians, especially minors, with equivalent protection regardless of their origin;
  • Prioritize the safety of Canadian minors abroad in government policies;
  • Increase funding for consular services to better assist children;
  • Provide logistical and legal support for child victims of crime outside Canada;
  • Urgent need to bolster the commitment to protect Canadians abroad, especially children;
  • Optimize aid funds to meet the specific challenges of foreign countries and provide effective support; and
  • Adapt embassies and consulates to provide legal assistance in dealing with local legal systems.
We, the undersigned, Citizens of Canada, call upon the House of Commons to
1. Prioritize the protection of Canadian children abroad who are victims of crime. Regardless of their place of residence or the country where the crime was committed, it is imperative that consular services adapted to their specific needs be provided;
2. We call for specialized teams of lawyers and investigators to be established and for special funds to be provided to support any necessary legal action. These measures will help effectively defend the interests of young Canadian minors while respecting local laws and customs, especially when parents or guardians lack the knowledge required to navigate the foreign legal system; and
3. We insist that child protection be made a top priority for Canadian consular services, which involves allocating adequate budgets and making new regulations to ensure their unconditional protection.
